YouTube transcript API
Build caption-aware applications with structured transcript lines, language metadata, source labels, normalized video information, caching, and export-ready timing.
Receive start time, duration, and cleaned text for each section.
Include video identity, language choices, and selected track source.
Separate invalid URLs, missing captions, restrictions, and upstream limits.
A production response should contain normalized video metadata, selectedLanguage, a manual-or-automatic source value, available languages, and transcript lines with start, duration, and text. Keep the response schema versioned and make future optional fields additive.
A resilient API combines request deduplication, safe caching, exponential backoff, provider fallbacks, clear timeouts, and a queue that prevents upstream bursts. Cache successful caption results because they usually change infrequently, and maintain negative caching briefly for known unavailable videos.
Return stable error codes for INVALID_URL, NO_CAPTIONS, VIDEO_RESTRICTED, UPSTREAM_RATE_LIMIT, TIMEOUT, and EXTRACTION_FAILED. A clear error contract helps clients decide whether to correct input, retry later, or offer an audio-transcription fallback.
The current product uses internal web endpoints. Public API access should launch only after API-key authentication, per-key quotas, billing, abuse controls, versioning, observability, documentation, a status page, and a published service policy are implemented.
No API can guarantee every public video because captions, restrictions, removals, and upstream behavior are controlled elsewhere. A credible service target should apply to supported public videos with accessible caption tracks and should report source and failure state accurately.
Frequently asked questions
The application has internal endpoints. A public API should launch after authentication, quotas, documentation, and support policies are complete.
No. It can provide a strong service target for supported videos with accessible captions, but upstream availability remains outside its control.
Yes, where permitted. Safe caching reduces latency and upstream request pressure.
Creator-uploaded captions preferred. Clean reading and precise exports.
